The student Babel. The Cité internationale universitaire de Paris (1920-1950)

18,00

This book, the result of an international colloquium, takes stock of existing work and, on the basis of new sources, aims to open up new research perspectives. Devoted to the first decades of existence of an institution that is now almost a hundred years old, it invites us to consider this complex object as a transnational social space, marked by the tensions that ran from its foundation in the early 1950s, between imperial and national logics and internationalist logics.

Summary
of the book

Designed in the aftermath of the First World War to meet the need for student accommodation in Paris and to satisfy the hygienic construction criteria of the turn of the century, the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris welcomed up to 2,400 students a year of some thirty nationalities between the two wars. From the outset, the French public authorities gave it a twofold mission: to attract to France the flow of mobile students that the European capitals were competing for at the time, and to sow the seeds of Genevan pacifism and cooperation among the elite of the world's young people in training, prior to the recent League of Nations. However, the French and foreign actors (academics and students, parliamentarians and diplomats, patrons and philanthropists, architects) did not project the same ambitions or the same goals. Through a cross-study of the discourses and practices of these multiple actors, in relation to their itineraries and social positions, and through the restitution of key moments of consensus or dissonance, the present work, resulting from an international colloquium, takes stock of existing works and, based on new sources, intends to open up research perspectives.
